Lucas Nadel
Lucas Nadel is a contemporary artist based in France. He creates intricate works based on New Mythology using various media. He currently resides in a residency made by artists for artists. He shares his Paris studio with 13 other artists.
“I create for myself because it must exist for me. Now it is mostly about reflecting on what I discover with all my reading and discussion about the new myth and the evolution of spirituality. What is very interesting to explore for people in our generation is the philosophy of fictionalism. How fiction and mythology are sacred, but still allow us to give meaning to our own lives.”
About Lucas Nadel
Lucas has been painting and drawing for over half of his life. He never stopped drawing when he was a kid. When he was a teenager, he and his friend bonded over art and created their own space on an old farm dedicated to creating. Lucas studied script writing and was curious to see how he could incorporate this in his drawings to create something new. This is how his fascination for New Mythology began. It felt natural to grow into painting with his best friend. Nowadays, he can’t do anything else. If he stops creating for 10 days, he feels sad. He just doesn’t know how to do anything else.
“The last two years have given me lots of new opportunities that make me feel like everything is falling into place. New techniques, new collaborations, but mainly the philosophy of New Mythology greatly inspire me. By discovering new things, I can create my own point of view. This leads to a more intellectual way of developing the meaning of what I do.”
Empowering creativity
Lucas feels inspired by many different things: what he reads, the people he meets. He’s interested in very conceptual things. “I’m discovering how to tell a story. Telling stories is the best tool there is to bring people together, create beliefs and to write history. Studying religion and philosophy, my own readings and my personal teacher – an old Parisian watercolour artist who I see as a master – continue to inspire me.”
When asked about leaving a legacy as an artist, Lucas responds that he is too young to think about such things, but he does think about what he wants to explore, what makes his concepts interesting and what parts of his personal life he is willing to share.
“I don’t have anything to claim, and I don’t create for other people. For me creating is a way to give life to all types of questions in his head. Art can become something else than what was on my mind. I don’t think about what I want to share or leave behind in a material way.”

“Why I work with Rembrandt? We see a lot of new colours being brought into the market, but we don’t see how the colours have evolved. I want to work with a brand that has a history and can talk about their journey. Rembrandt has this legacy.
I especially like colours such as the 229 Quinacridone Orange, 291 Titanium Buff, 238 Gamboge, 593 Quinacridone Purple Bluish, 550 Cerulean Blue Deep and 585 Indanthrene Blue.”
