DIY herb garden
Recycling and upcycling are great ways to give old materials a new life. Add this colourful DIY herb garden to your backyard so you always have access to your favourite fresh herbs!
In this step-by-step plan, Riek van de Bor (@RiekvandeBor on Instagram) shows you how to create your own herb garden out of an old wooden pallet! To make it durable and suitable for outside use, she painted the crate using Talens Art Creation Indoor & Outdoor paint. She also added some handy labels using Blackboard paint and chalk. Let’s get into it!
What you need
- Talens Art Creation Indoor & Outdoor
- Talens Art Creation Blackboard
- Wooden pallet
- Jigsaw
- Sandpaper
- Staplegun
- Nails, staples and screws
- Root cloth or plastic
- Paint brushes
- Chalk
- Various fresh herbs
- Soil
Step 1
Measure out how big you want your crate to be and use the jigsaw to cut suitable planks out of the wooden pallet.

Step 2
Assemble the crate using screws or nails.

Step 3
Sand the crate using a piece of sandpaper to make sure the wood is as smooth as possible and free of splinters.

Step 4
Paint the herb rack using Indoor & Outdoor paint in your favourite colour. Riek used the colour Dusty Blue. Let dry for 30 minutes.

Step 5
Paint some labels onto the crate using Blackboard paint and let dry for 30 minutes.

Step 6
Attach plastic or root cloth to the inside of the crate using a staplegun.

Step 7
Write the names of your chosen herbs onto the labels using chalk. If you ever decide to switch up your herbs, you can easily erase the names on the labels and rewrite them!

Step 8
Fill the crate with soil and your favourite herbs. Enjoy your new homemade herb garden!
